Undefined
December 1, 2023
Undefined is my final project for my Intermediate New Media class that was installed for our end-of-the-year group viewing on December 1st, 2024 at Ruffin Hall.
Undefined's installation utilizes a MIDI drum pad connected to a projector, which displays an image on four different surfaces: the front face of the top box, two faces of the bottom box, and a smaller surface enclosed by a picture frame. Each pad of the MIDI device changes the visuals and audio, and is meant to be interacted with by the audience.

Undefined is a conceptual self-portrait that dives into the idea of the “self”. The ways we define ourselves can be distilled into a number of different “lenses”; some which are determined by external factors, like our physical appearance, our location, and those we surround ourselves with, while others show aspects of our internal self, such as our morals and values, our past experiences, and our passions. These lenses provide different perspectives through which we can view ourselves, but not one of these perspectives on their own provides the full picture. Viewing these lenses on their own will only provide a distorted, obscured version of our true self. We do not exist as a finite person, defined by a set of actions, experiences, or values. We are a dynamic combination of all of these factors interacting and changing all at once. We are not the same person we were yesterday, and we are not the same person we will be tomorrow. We exist as we are now, unbound by physicality, unbound by time. We are undefined.
